Granny Moves to a High Rise Condo

Tiel Way

Four Leaf Tower View

The old homestead on Tiel Way, which we first occupied in 1959, proved to a bit too big for one person, so Granny (Marion to some people) joined Jim's sister Flo in the Four Leaf Tower condo. Flo is on the 35th floor, Granny on the 21st. Surprisingly, much of the furniture from Tiel Way fit into the new place just fine, though it seemed to take forever to get it put in the right place. The dining room table was covered with plates and glasses for weeks while work on the cabinets ran into one snag after another. Ah, the joys of moving, especially after 45 years.

This arrangement, which our friend Tish Clark christened the FloMarion gambit, has a lot to recommend it. Granny has her own space, but they can get together frequently.

Panika

Panika in BronxvilleJim, in a display of avuncular responsibility, accompanied Panika to New York to help her get settled in Bronxville, NY. We managed to work in a few trips into the city for some poetry, map out the best walking route to Sarah Lawrence College, and find a great coffee shop that needed a part-time barista. One semester was enough to convince Panika that she needed to take some time off, so now she is back in Austin living with us, working as a part-time barista and doing some poetry. She plans to return to SLC in 2006.

Texas Book Festival:

This year, as we have for several years, we attended the Texas Book Festival in late October. The featured speakers included Bill Clinton, Salmon Rushdie, Jane Smiley, David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin. For the first time in our lives we stood in line for two hours with a bunch of interesting people to get wristbands that allowed entry into Bill Clinton’s talk. Linda stood in line another couple of hours to get her copy of My Life signed. The book festival is well worth a trip to Austin. Next year, it will be held October 27-29 at the State Capitol. It’s free, and all the proceeds go to support Texas public libraries. Please come join us. We could have an intellectual salon that weekend, or perhaps a Big Chill get together.
