On the evening of July 6, 2005, our newest birding friend in California, Toby Tomkin, who lives in Fort Bragg and graciously showed us around, arranged for us to accompany Mike Stevens, a biological researcher studying Spotted Owls in California. We watched as Mike fed four mice to the owl one at a time, placing each one on a log. This owl, a male, ate all of the mice, which according to Mike implies that there were no young around for him to feed. The record rains last winter probably affected the nesting success. This owl was quite tame, even curious about us. I was able to approach close enough to get this great shot.
