View of the entrance to inner sanctum of the Panakha Dzong.

About this photo:Dzongs are medieval fortresses, today converted into government offices. The fortresses and the modern equivalent also serve as Budhist monasteries. This is the entrance to the portion of the monastery dedicated to monk's training. Inside, where we weren't allow to photograph, legions of boys and young men sit on the floor endlessly reciting Sanskrit scriptural phrases until they have memorized them to the satisfaction of the whip-wielding monitor. This is the only dzong where we were allowed inside. It has been rennovated recently, as you may be able to tell from the bright paintings on either side of the door. |
