All I Got Was This T-Shirt

About this photo:

Well, that's not exactly true. The trip to Bhutan was fantastic: everything we expected and some more. For instance, the food was much better than we had been led to expect. A particular treat was fiddlehead ferns, which go for about $16/pound in the US. We had them lunch and dinner for many days in a row.

The birds were amazing. Nothing is quite like repeated stunning views of globally endangered species such as the Rufous-necked Hornbill, or the Beautiful Nuthatch, seen by only a handful. The most unusual bird of the trip was the Wedge-billed Wren-babbler, thought to be extinct until rediscovered in 2001, and surely one of the least attactive birds in the world. Good-looking birds included the Himalayan Monal, a pheasant rivaling a Peacock for brilliant plumage. Sunbirds, including the spectacular Mrs. Gould's Sunbird, were common.

The only disappointment was missing the signature bird of Bhutan, the Satyr Tragopan, which we heard repeatedly and very close, but didn't see.

The T-Shirt shows the Bhutanese dragon, which appears on the flag of the country.
