Hargrove Annual Report 2003: Spider | |||||||||||||
Neoscona arabesca on the leaf of a willow(?) tree. |
||
About this photo:This ferocious-looking spider was trying to stay on the leaf of a tree by Pond 1 West at Hornsby Bend as I shepherded a group of elementary students around on October 30, 2003. The wind was blowing hard, and the spider continually struggled to stay put, pulling up on a drag line several times. This spider is not large, about 1cm or .25" for the body. I have another shot that gives you a better idea of the scale. Although I have labeled this as arabesca, that is by no means 100%. A quick look at Plate 12 in Spiders & Scorpions of Texas shows that there are some similar species. |
