Gasteracantha cancriformis on Platt Lane, Austin, TX October 11, 2003

About this photo:

This incredible looking spider is quite common at the right season in the woods near Hornsby Bend. According to the field guide, they come in several colors: white, yellow, and red. I am still looking for a red one. I found this spider when I left the path on a personal errand and blundered into the web. The spider immediately started work repairing the damage, which gave me many chances to get a good photo. I also took one of the spider from underneath for those of you who doubt that this is really a spider.

Identification: This is an easy one. See 21M, Plate 11, in Spiders & Scorpions of Texas.
