This large chorten marks the spot where Guru Rimpoche vanquished a female demon.

About this photo:Guru Rimpoche, the semi-legendary monk who converted Bhutan to Budhism, traveled around the country dealing with the demons left over from earlier times. At the site of this chorten, he vanquished a demon, converting her into a beneficial, protective spirit who watches over the valley. You can see the symbolic eyes at the top. These look in all the compass directions, just to be safe. The site was advertised to possess real hygienic facilities. but after a quick check, most of us headed for the nearby bushes. Some of us forgot to walk around the chorten in a clockwise direction, but apparently the spirits were in a forgiving mood and didn't punish us for our oversight. |
