Jim Along the Barton Creek Greenbelt

About this photo:

Every spring, we can count on some visiting birder calling to ask directions to a guaranteed spot for the Golden-cheeked Warbler. This lovely bird is the only species that nests only in Texas. For some reason, it isn't the state bird.

Every spring, I try to find a spot where I can take people from out-of-town. The most convenient location is right in the heart of Austin, along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, with easy access from the MoPac freeway.

Linda and I were checking out likely spots when she snapped this photo. The warblers regularly nest in large oak trees such as this magnificent specimen.

We did manage to locate a singing male that morning. We aren't always so lucky.
