About this photo:Linda and Jim left Leslie to entertain Lil for the day while we went on a day trip to see orcas. Up before dawn in time to get to the boat. Then a long cruise to Friday Harbor, where we had a short wait before cruising around the islands. We finally got several nice views of the orcas, the "J" pod. These orcas have been studied for years. Experts can identify individual whales by the shape of the dorsal fin and the pattern of black and white. One amazing individual, Granny, aka J2, was the second whale in the J pod identified. By searching old photos, researchers have established that Granny is an astonishing 94 years old! We think that the lead whale in this photo is Granny, but we won't bet money on it. |
