2008 Annual Report: About Richard Brien

I have liked this quotation for many years, and thought it particularly appropriate for 2008. There are at least two obvious candidates for the organization I have in mind. I'll let you decide for yourself.

I tried to find a citation for the quote, which appears several times on the web, always attributed merely to "Richard Brien." A bit of googling turned up a likely candidate, a business professor at De Anza College. A quick email verified that he was indeed the author of the quote. He provided a bit of background:

I am that Richard Brien and a UT Ph.D., in fact.  I first said it in a paper I wrote while a Fellow of the American Council on Education and Associate Dean of the B-school at the University of Houston.  It subsequently appeared as follows:

"The 'Managerialization' of Higher Education", The Educational Record, American Council on Education, Summer 1970.

If you want to cite the full published source, that would be it. That publication has since been re-focused on only the top levels of academic administration and is now called The Presidency.
