At their age, a year makes a lot of difference, as you can see from these two school photos. As with most grandchildren, these are adorable and brilliant.
Both are also fearless. When we took them to the California Academy of Science, it took three of us to keep track of them. Charles had to alert me that Kiera was nowhere to be seen while Linda and I were watching butterflies and birds in the rainforest area. I quickly retraced my steps and found her completely unconcerned.
Later, Kai pulled the same trick, disappearing when we weren't paying close attention. When we finally located him after several minutes of hunting, he called, "Dad, come see this!" He had found the albino alligator that serves as a mascot for the museum.
Kiera didn't start talking for a long time. We weren't worried: Charles was a late talker and it didn't seem to make much difference. Kiera had tubes inserted in her ears, and that did speed up the process. Now, she seldom stops talking.
We have more pictures of them.
