Still adjusting to Urban Life

We have now had a full two years to get used to urban living. The adjustment continues. We enjoy having so many places to go within walking distance: several good restaurants, a branch of the SF Public Library, an old-fashioned bookstore, and other shops. Unfortunately, the walk home is always uphill. Indeed, San Francisco is always uphill.

We still manage to get in some exercise besides walking uphill. Jim has found a group of old guys to play tennis with. Two members are 90+ years old! He plays at the one of the Bay Clubs, in San Francisco, a short drive from the condo, with many indoor courts. Linda usually walks the kids to school then continues to her aquafit class at the Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center at UCSF Mission Bay. We hope that planned renovation of the tennis facility will add a pool there so we can go to the same place.

Meanwhile life continues apace. The grandchildren are getting older, bigger, and even cuter. Kai is a teenager now, and about to move into High School in the fall. He has decided to follow his father's lead and has taken up fencing. Kiera, meanwhile, has many activities to occupy her, including Girl's Garage and Karate. Both grandkids continue to display musical talent that we can assure you comes from the Willat gene pool.

Scarlet and Nico are finally in the same school after considerable machinations last year. Nico is in first grade and Scarlet in second at Daniel Webster Elementary, a convenient walk from our condo. The school is a Spanish immersion site, so both are getting a dose of Español on a regular basis.

Both Scarlet and Nico show a fondness for numbers, occasionly asking us to pose arithmetic problems for them. They usually manage to work them out, even some difficult ones such as, “How much is 150*6?” After a conversation with Claire on Roman Numerals, Scarlet decided to do her entire math homework using Roman numerals. Her teacher was a bit taken aback.

Try your hand on a logic problem she has been working on. The answer is surprisingly easy once you think of it. (If you're stuck, drop me a line for the solution.)
